What is web hosting?
Web hosting refers to the process of publishing a web site so that
it is available to the world on the Web. Paid web hosting also
involves getting a domain name and not having forced ads displayed
on your site. Please see our various web hosting plans to launch
your website.
What is a domain name?
A domain name is a sequence of letters and numbers which determine
the address of your site. This site's domain name is "web2win.net"
You need to register a domain name before your web site becomes
accessible at this address. Please see our Domain Name Guidance
for all the details.
How do I get a registration?
If you ask for a registration
you get the right to "book" a domain according to the procedure
stated by naming rules.
Who's the owner of a registered domain?
The domain's owner is the
person or firm holding the registration request that will be
reachable World-Wide according to the TLD Authority rules.
What is a TLD?
A top level domain defines
the domain registering Authority.
This Authority keeps the database featuring the relation between
the domain name and the DNS.
What is a DNS?
The domain name system is a
peculiar code according to which domain name are direct with IP
numerical address code.
What is an IP address?
By mean of any Internet
Protocol address, like an telephone numbers, any specific computer
on the web can be identified and contacted.
Each computer connected has got our IP address.
What does DNS managing stand for?
The managing of each domain
must be lead by means of specific DNS which link the registered
domains to their IP addresses.
How long does it take to register a domain?
Generally two business day.
What are PHP, SQL, Java,
IP, etc.?
Those acronyms refer to various features such as programming
languages, databases, etc. that might be available with a hosting
plan. Please check out our Glossary for definitions. To find plans
that support these options.
What is shared (virtual) web hosting?
Shared (or virtual) web hosting is the most fitting way of hosting
for 99% of web sites. It means that a web hosting company will
have one or more servers (computers constantly connected to the
Internet that run a web server software such as Apache or IIS)
that will be running multiple web sites (it will be shared).
Unless a web site is exceptionally busy or requires a lot of
bandwidth, this is the least expensive way to get a real web site.
You can still have your own IP address with virtual hosting and
the site won't look any different to users. Other options are
dedicated, co-location, or doing it yourself web hosting. In those
options you have the whole computer to yourself and you can do
things like install your own software.
Can I keep my domain name when I change a host?
Yes. We recommend that you register your domain name with a
separate registrar before getting a hosting plan . When you need
to move to another host, you just need to point your domain's name
servers to this new host. If you registered your domain name with
a host and now you want to move, you should find your registration
records or contact this host and ask them how to control your
domain
What are subdomains?
Answer:
Consider subdomains as an extension of your domain. For example,
your site is www.example.com. A subdomain would be
test.example.com, and another would be webhosting.example.com.
Subdomains are usually treated as separate sites from the main
domain site.
How do I upload my site online?
Uploading your site can be done in many ways, but the most popular
is FTP.
When your hosting account was created, you should have been
provided with an FTP account. Using software such as
CuteFTP or
WS_FTP, you
can log into your host. Then, using the program like a normal
windows program, you can drag and drop files onto your web host.
These files become live online instantaneously.
There are other ways to upload your site such as using SSH or
uploading files through your browser
Domain Registration Guidance
Domain name is the address that users will enter in their web
browser (like Internet Explorer or Netscape) to access your web
site. For example this site's domain name is Web2win.net. ".net"
extension (called TLD, top-level domains) is most common for
commercial web sites. Non-profit organizations might prefer using
.org, universities usually use .edu, government sites use .gov.
ICANN (organization responsible for such matters) approved new
TLDs in November 2000, including .biz, .info, .name, .museum,
.coop, .areo, and .pro. Rules for registering domains with those
TLDs vary, see
http://www.internic.net/faqs/new-tlds.html for more info.
Other domains like .tv are also available - most commonly they
were originally assigned to small countries or provinces and
subsequently sold to companies that offer them to everybody.
Many web hosts will register a domain name for you if you choose
this option when opening an account. However, we recommend doing
it separately before opening a hosting account because hosts
usually don't have most competitive rates and because if you
decide to move your site to another host, you will already be
familiar with domain name administration and you will have full
control over it.
The minimum period for which a domain name can be registered is 1
year. You need to make sure to renew a domain name before it
expires, or you may lose it to somebody.
If you don't yet have a web site but there is a domain name that
you want now, you can register it and use domain parking which is
a cheap way to display an "Under Construction" message.
You should know that the name, street address, e-mail address, and
phone number that you use when registering a domain name will be
publicly viewable by anybody that performs a so-called Whois
lookup on this domain name. You should expect to receive spam at
this email address.
Unfortunately, you will find out that most common words and
sentences for domain names are already in use, especially in the
.com
What are subdomains?
Consider subdomains as an extension of your domain. For example,
your site is www.example.com.
A subdomain would be
test.example.com, and another would be
webhosting.example.com.
Subdomains are usually treated as separate sites from the main
domain site.
